Amputee Wannabes and Asexuals
I have seen some very interesting, yet strange, documentaries about people that
don’t fit what society calls normal. Amputee
Wannabes is about people who feel one or more
of their limbs do not belong on their bodies. It is slightly similar to
transexuals feeling of gender dysphoria, but doesn’t apply to the genitals.
This idea of feeling this way is very strange to me. I don’t really understand
where they come from. After watching the documentary, I do empathize with them
and wish them the best in their lives. Hopefully someday in the future there
will be easier/better methods of treatment, either therapy or better
understanding doctors to perform the amputations.
The other documentary about
Asexuals produced a
similar reaction. At first I expected that these people are crazy
psychopaths. However, They are not. After re-evaluating my inital reaction
with an open and non-judgmental mind, it is easy to see that there are people
who are asexual, just as there are those that are hetero, homo, and bi-sexual.
It is just another possible outcome in the varied population. I feel it is
important to understand the different types of people in the world. This led
me to some more research into asexuality.
CNN seems to think
that 1 in 100 people may be asexual. This seems a bit high as I have never met
one. But then again, it may be hard for many people to really be open about
something like that. I even dug up an article in the Salt Lake City
Weekly about the
subject that came out a few years ago. Also pretty interesting.
Both of these documentaries aim to educate and promote tolerance and
understanding, ideas that I hold dear.
